All of us have experienced embarrassment, shame, and self consciousness. Why do we feel these things? Why do we, as teenagers, care so much about what other people think about us? Why do we watch what we do, what we say, and how we act to create an “image”? Well, it’s, in most cases, all about feeling “cool” or should I say “legit”. But really none of that matters. Many people feel that they have to tear others down to obtain this image and make themselves sound better. That seems so backwards.
As a peer tutor I am with a student for one whole class period. I have to make sure that they understand what we are doing and help them gain skills from their classes. One day I was walking down the hall with one of these students. As I was walking down the hall I felt like I was the coolest person in the world. Why? I think it was because I was with one of the most fun people around. They were saying hi to everyone and I’m sure that they weren’t judging any of their peers. They accept each person as they are. I felt like the coolest person in the world, probably because I knew that they didn’t care what I did, what I looked like, how I was acting, or even if I was crazy. I felt so accepted and so comfortable.
Now, imagine the most likeable person you know. What makes them likeable? Achieving that status rank that you want isn’t what you may think it’s all about. If you were to try your hardest to accept everyone and be happy, there wouldn’t be one person that wouldn’t love being around you. I’m sure that the person that you decided was the most likeable person you know, has these same traits. Don’t you wish that you were the person that each of us thought of? Someone once told me, always dance when you are mad. If you follow this guideline then you will be on your way to becoming the person everyone thinks of when they think “likeable person”. I realized that I need to try harder to become a likable person. So, Miss Gardner, I like your red hair. Stephen, you are funny. Jessica, you are so pretty. Julia you are so super smart! Sam, you write amazing papers. And Kali you are a very likeable person. I’m sure I could easily say something about each of you, but I’m sure that we need to go on and hear more occasional papers. However, remember, Dance when you are mad, forget about holding back your real personality, and most importantly have fun!
